Lost and Found Pets

One of the most rewarding services provided by the Humane Society for Southwest Washington is the successful reunion of lost pets with their owners. Our staff reunites more than 1,000 lost animals each year.

Looking for Your Missing Pet?

1. Come to the Shelter immediately ~ save time by filling out a Lost Pet Report , but please know that you need to bring the report to the Shelter and search for your lost pet! While at the Shelter your report will be compared with the found reports taken over the phone. In 2006 we cared for more than 13,000 animals. You know the identifying marks on your pets much better than we do. By coming to the shelter you will help find your pet more quickly. We thank you for your understanding.

2. Check with neighbors ~ children are often a good resource, but please be respectful and speak with parents before approaching a child.

3. You can also download a LOST PET flyer to post around your neighborhood. Please be as detailed and descriptive as possible- every detail can help!

4. Place ads in local newspapers and watch for any found ads that might match the description of your animal. You can place a lost pet ad in The Columbian for a fee. Visit thier site at www.columbianshop.com for more information.

5. Visit the Humane Society at least every 3 days. We will check our in-house logs each time you visit.

6. Don’t give up. It may take months to locate a missing pet.

7. Call the Humane Society if your pet is found, then...

*MICROCHIP YOUR PET! - A microchip acts as an added insurance policy and will help reunite lost animals with their owners, even if the animal somehow slips their collar. The cost of microchipping your pet is $30 at the Humane Society's low-cost microchip clinics. Click here for more information about our microchip clinics.

* Put a collar with ID and a license on the animal so that it can be traced back and returned to you.
* Neuter your pet to reduce roaming and not add to the overpopulation problem.
* Make sure your cat stays inside unless on a leash or in a supervised area.
* Make sure when your dog is outside it is in a fenced yard or on a leash.

Did You Find Someone’s Lost Pet?

1. Call the Humane Society to place a found report over the telephone, 360-693-4746.

After contacting us, you can keep the animal at your home while still looking for the owner, for up to 30 days from the date that you found it. You may at anytime during the 30 days bring the animal to the Humane Society as a found animal/stray. If after 30 days the original owner still is not found, the animal must be licensed, neutered and vaccinated, as a newly acquired pet.

2. Bring the animal to the Humane Society or your local veterinarian to be scanned for a microchip. Many animals have them in the skin between their shoulder blades, and you wouldn’t ever know that it was there!  If a microchip is found, the owner can be contacted immediately.

3.  Post flyers around the area you found the animal.  Download the FOUND PET posters to make it easy.

4. Visit www.columbianshop.com  to place a free found ad in the classified section of The Columbian.

5. Call the Humane Society if the animal is returned to their owner.

Please Note: We do not accept STRAY animals from outside  Clark County. Our out-of-county surrender fee for owner surrenders is $60 per animal.  In addition, animals coming from out of state must be accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection and proof of current Rabies vaccination. We cannot accept the animals without one.
