When she arrived at HSSW, Mellica was pregnant and only days away from giving birth. She had been living in a car with her owner and was in desperate need of a calm and safe space to have her litter. She was quickly placed in an HSSW foster home and within days gave birth to eight puppies including a little blue-eyed pup named… Blue.

Blue and his littermates had everything they needed: a safe space, attentive caregivers, and top-notch medical care. And Mellica was a wonderful mom – patient and supportive to all eight of her rambunctious pups. And after several weeks, Blue and his family were ready to find loving homes.

“When we met Blue, he was running around the room being zoomy and hyper when he suddenly jumped into my lap,” said Ashlin. “I gave him a hug and he just sat there for a few seconds with his head on me. I just looked at my boyfriend… that’s when we knew he was the puppy for us. We call him Hercules now, and he’s better than we thought a puppy could be! He gives the best kisses, nose-boops us when he’s excited, and carries a stuffed moose everywhere. We are so in love with him.”

And this happy story isn’t just about puppies finding loving homes, Mellica also found her new family – and it turned out to be a family she already knew well. Her foster family had fallen in love with Mellica and adopted her.
